Smoke reported in turbine building at Tsuruga nuclear plant in central Japan

TSURUGA, Fukui — Smoke was found coming from the turbine building of the No. 1 reactor at the Tsuruga nuclear power plant here on the morning of Feb. 8, the Japan Atomic Power Co. reported.

No injuries or damage to the reactor were reported following the incident, the operator said.

A fire alarm on an air conditioning unit inside the turbine building reportedly went off. The power company and firefighters are investigating the cause.

Work to decommission the plant’s No. 1 reactor has been progressing since 2017.
